Inter Miami have confirmed the appointment of Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino as their new head coach, setting the stage for a reunion with Lionel Messi, who is set to join the club next month. Martino has previously coached Messi at both Barcelona and Argentina’s national team.
A New Era for Inter Miami
Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, expressed his excitement about Martino’s arrival, stating, “We are very happy to be able to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We feel he is a coach who matches our ambitions as a club, and we’re optimistic about what we can accomplish together. Tata has coached at the highest levels, and we believe that experience will be hugely beneficial to us as we aim to compete for titles here”.
Martino replaces Phil Neville, who was fired four weeks ago due to the team’s poor performance this season. Inter Miami currently holds the worst record in the Eastern Conference, with a 5-13-0 record in MLS play.
Messi’s Arrival and Martino’s MLS Success
Lionel Messi is expected to make his debut for Inter Miami in a Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul on July 21. Martino’s return to Major League Soccer is anticipated to bring success to the struggling club, as he previously led Atlanta United to an MLS Cup in 2018 and won the league’s Coach of the Year award that same season. Martino has won 54% of the MLS games he has coached.
