Germany clinched a thrilling 4-3 victory over Switzerland, with Florian Wirtz starring as the decisive match-winner.

Germany secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Switzerland in a high-octane friendly at St. Jakob-Park. Midfield maestro Florian Wirtz proved the undeniable hero, not only scoring twice but also assisting two other crucial goals for his nation. His exceptional performance dictated the tempo of a captivating encounter.

This eagerly anticipated friendly offered both European football powerhouses a significant opportunity to test their tactical setups. They aimed to evaluate key players ahead of upcoming major competitions. Switzerland sought to showcase their renowned defensive solidity and cohesive unit, while Germany focused on unleashing their attacking potential against a strong opponent.

The home side, Switzerland, broke the deadlock first in the 17th minute. Dan Ndoye showed great composure to power home a finish, expertly guided by a precise pass from captain Granit Xhaka. The early goal ignited the Basel crowd, giving the Swiss a crucial confidence boost.

Germany, however, responded swiftly and with determination, leveling the score in the 26th minute. Towering defender Jonathan Tah rose highest to head in from close range. The equalizer came from a perfectly delivered set-piece, highlighting the excellent vision and execution from Florian Wirtz.

Breel Embolo then restored Switzerland’s lead in the 41st minute, showcasing his clinical finishing. He expertly converted an assist from Silvan Widmer, restoring the home team’s advantage. Yet, Germany pushed hard for another equalizer before the half-time whistle, showing their resilience.

Their persistence paid off in stoppage time. Serge Gnabry found the net in the 45+2 minute, once again showcasing his predatory instincts in front of goal. The influential Wirtz provided another assist, sending both teams into the break tied at 2-2 in a truly pulsating contest.

The first half concluded with four goals and an evenly poised, electrifying contest. Both managers likely used the interval to call for crucial defensive adjustments and a sharper focus in the final third. The second half was perfectly set for more drama and decisive moments.

Germany emerged from the break with renewed vigor and attacking intent. Florian Wirtz continued his stellar individual performance, scoring his first goal of the night in the 61st minute. His powerful strike, set up brilliantly by Serge Gnabry, gave Germany the lead for the very first time in the match.

Switzerland responded with a flurry of substitutions, notably introducing Joël Monteiro into the game. These strategic changes injected fresh energy and attacking impetus into their lineup. Monteiro quickly made an impact, scoring a dramatic equalizer in the 79th minute with a clever finish, making it 3-3.

The thrilling encounter seemed destined for a draw, but Florian Wirtz had the final say. With just five minutes remaining, in the 85th minute, Wirtz secured his second goal of the match, an exquisite late strike. His decisive goal, assisted by Pascal Gross, ultimately secured Germany’s hard-fought and memorable victory.

Germany’s dominance in attacking statistics was clear, registering 22 total shots with 9 on target, compared to Switzerland’s 7 shots and 3 on target. They also commanded 54% possession and earned 10 corner kicks. Switzerland’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, however, made 5 crucial saves, valiantly keeping his team in contention throughout.
