The future of a player can often be shrouded in mystery. This is currently the case for Roma star Paulo Dybala, who has left the club waiting for a decision on his future.

A Stellar Season

Dybala, also known as ‘La Joya’, scored the last goal of the season for the Giallorossi, a crucial last-gasp penalty against Spezia. This goal allowed Roma to secure a 2-1 win and qualify for the Europa League. Reflecting on the match, Dybala stated, “It was a difficult game for us, but we knew we wanted a place in Europe. We left everything on the pitch and we won. Fans are incredible, it’s hard to support the team after losing a Final. They’ve supported us for the entire season and they deserve to celebrate this step.”

An Uncertain Future

Dybala joined Roma as a free agent last summer, signing a three-year contract. He has a double release clause included in his deal at the Stadio Olimpico. One is worth €20m and is valid for Serie A clubs, one’s worth €12m for clubs outside Italy’s top flight. When asked about his future, the Argentinean World Cup winner stated, “Now we must enjoy the moment, there will be time to talk about the future, I have two years left in my contract.”

Dybala was arguably Roma’s best player this season having scored 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions. The Giallorossi have finished sixth in Serie A and will play in Europa League in 2023-24.
