Newcastle United is reportedly on the brink of a sensational signing, with Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella potentially joining the ranks. The move, which is expected to cost around £50 million, is seen as a significant statement from the club as they prepare for their return to Champions League football next season.
The Magpies have been linked with a host of players, including Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, Kyle Walker-Peters, and James Ward-Prowse, Leeds United’s Brenden Aaronson, and Leicester City duo James Maddison and Harvey Barnes. However, the potential acquisition of Barella, who has attracted interest from top clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool, is seen as a major coup.
Barella’s performance has been instrumental in Inter’s journey to the 2023 Champions League final and their Serie A success in 2020/21. The 26-year-old midfielder, who has three years left on his contract, is now reportedly close to moving to Newcastle, according to Telegraph journalists Luke Edwards and Mike McGrath.
The deal, which is believed to be worth around £50 million, is seen as a bargain, especially considering Barella’s contract situation. Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s boss, is expected to spend a significant portion of his budget on two midfield players, with James Maddison being the other main target.
Barella’s addition would be a ‘stunning upgrade’ on midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and would allow star man Bruno Guimaraes to play further up the pitch. The deal is reportedly ‘reachable’ after ‘intensive talks’ took place this week.
The club is also optimistic about winning the race for James Maddison, despite interest from Tottenham. The Magpies can offer Champions League football and the opportunity to be part of what could be one of the best midfield trios in the country.
