Emersonn scored his first goal for the club to give Ipswich Town the advantage in their Premier League clash against Sunderland at Portman Road.
The Brazilian forward, who recently completed a £24m transfer from French side Toulouse, broke the deadlock midway through the first half with a clinical finish.
The hosts started with plenty of intent, creating early opportunities after record signing Julio Enciso dispossessed Angulo high up the pitch to energise the home crowd.
Ipswich suffered an early setback inside the opening quarter of an hour when Fatawu Issahaku was forced off the pitch after just 12 minutes of play.
Emersonn had earlier threatened the visitors inside the opening ten minutes, though his looping header from distance was comfortably gathered by Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
The breakthrough arrived on 24 minutes when Emersonn found space inside the penalty area to slot past Roefs and put the hosts firmly in front.
Roefs remained alert between the posts for Sunderland, producing sharp interventions to prevent the home side from doubling their first-half advantage before the break.
The encounter marked the first top-flight meeting between the two clubs since December 2001, when Ipswich recorded an emphatic 5-0 home victory in the competition.
Sunderland attempted to establish control with extended spells of possession before the interval, but struggled to break down a well-organised Ipswich defensive line.
