Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy struck in the first half as Hull City took a commanding 2-0 lead against Manchester United at the MKM Stadium.
Playing their first top-flight fixture in nine years following their Championship play-off promotion, the Tigers showed no signs of intimidation against their heavily favoured visitors.
Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest inside the penalty area to knock home a loose rebound and send the home crowd into raptures.
Manchester United dominated possession throughout the opening period with over seventy percent of the ball, but they struggled to carve out clear openings against a resolute and well-organised home defence.
Hull doubled their advantage seven minutes before the interval when Mendy rose highest to power home a header from Regan Slater's delivery, which stood after a video review.
Referee Darren England issued first-half yellow cards to Patrick Dorgu and Matt Crooks as the contest grew increasingly competitive across midfield before the break.
The visitors sought an immediate response early in the second half when Bruno Fernandes floated a dangerous cross towards Harry Maguire at the far post.
Maguire hooked the ball into the path of Bryan Mbeumo, only for Mendy to turn the ball behind before Oli McBurnie cleared the resulting corner.
The Tigers comfortably absorbed pressure in the second half, having historically gone on to win every previous Premier League match where they held a two-goal half-time lead.
