Ilkay Gundogan is set to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer, with the 32-year-old midfielder having said “yes” to a move to Barcelona, As per Spanish journalist Toni Juanmarti,

Gundogan, who captained City to a historic treble last season, has been a key figure at the club since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2016. He has won five Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, and played a pivotal role in City’s first Champions League triumph.

However, Barcelona’s financial constraints could pose a significant hurdle to the transfer. The Catalan club must resolve its Financial Fair Play situation and ensure that there are no issues with registering Gundogan. If the registration process is not completed within a certain timeframe, Gundogan wants the freedom to consider other options, as his contract with City expires this summer.

Despite these potential obstacles, Barcelona fans have expressed their delight at the prospect of Gundogan’s arrival. The German international’s experience, versatility, and proven pedigree make him a highly sought-after player, and his potential addition to Xavi’s squad has been met with enthusiasm.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recently commented on Gundogan’s potential move, stating: “We are interested in renewing his contract and [Barcelona] are also interested. I hope he stays with us. We are still fighting for him to stay with us. He is a player we want to stay – and we will do all we can – but we know Barca want him. If Barca sign him, they will have a spectacular footballer on their hands.”

Meanwhile, City are reportedly preparing for life after Gundogan, with the imminent signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea. As the summer transfer window unfolds, the future of Gundogan promises to be a compelling storyline.
