Crysencio Summerville’s second-half strike secured a vital 1-0 away victory for West Ham against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
The crucial win on March 4, 2026, delivered three invaluable points to the Hammers in their intense battle against Premier League relegation. Fulham, sitting comfortably in ninth position with 40 points, aimed to solidify their top-half status.
West Ham, however, arrived in West London in 18th place, desperately needing a result to climb out of the relegation zone. Their recent form, marked by two draws and a loss in their last five, underscored the pressure on manager and players alike.
The first half saw Fulham dominate possession, controlling 60% of the ball. They frequently probed the West Ham defence, registering several shots.
West Ham’s disciplined defence stood firm, absorbing pressure. Midfielder M. Fernandes received the game’s first yellow card in the 17th minute for a holding foul. Later, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was booked for diving in the 41st minute, increasing the match tension.
Despite Fulham’s continuous efforts, the teams headed into the break scoreless. West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen dealt capably with all five of Fulham’s shots on target.
The deadlock at half-time highlighted Fulham’s frustration in converting their chances. For West Ham, it was a testament to their defensive resolve, knowing a moment of attacking brilliance could turn the tide in their favour.
The second half began with both teams looking to seize control. Fulham made an immediate triple substitution in the 61st minute, bringing on Rodrigo Muniz, Oscar Bobb, and Emile Smith Rowe to add fresh attacking impetus.
West Ham responded with their own change, introducing Soungoutou Magassa for Callum Wilson, also in the 61st minute. This period of tactical adjustments soon paid dividends for the away side.
The breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute. Jarrod Bowen, instrumental throughout, delivered a precise assist to Crysencio Summerville, who fired home the decisive goal. Summerville’s cool finish put West Ham 1-0 ahead, sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters.
Fulham pushed relentlessly for an equaliser in the remaining minutes, introducing Timothy Castagne and Ryan Sessegnon in the 82nd minute. However, West Ham’s defence held firm, enduring a late flurry of yellow cards for Calvin Bassey, N’Golo Kante, and Antonee Robinson in added time.
Fulham finished the match with 60% ball possession and a total of 13 shots, with 5 finding the target. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 1.01. West Ham, despite only 40% possession, were more clinical, converting one of their 9 shots (3 on target) and registering a higher xG of 1.09, showcasing their efficiency. Hermansen’s five crucial saves played a pivotal role in preserving the clean sheet.
This hard-fought 0-1 victory provides a monumental boost for West Ham, lifting them temporarily out of the Premier League relegation zone. For Fulham, it was a frustrating afternoon. Their dominance in possession failed to translate into goals, leaving them to rue missed opportunities.
