Everton secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, with two unexpected own goals profoundly shaping the Premier League clash.
This crucial mid-table encounter saw both sides entering the fixture level on 34 points, with Fulham in ninth and Everton in tenth. Fulham aimed to bounce back from recent inconsistency, while Everton sought to build momentum after a mixed run of form.
The game began with a surprising turn of events in the 18th minute. Everton’s Vitaliy Mykolenko, under pressure, inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, giving Fulham an unexpected early lead.
The own goal stunned the visitors, who then saw Idrissa Gueye receive a yellow card for a foul moments later as frustrations mounted. Fulham looked to capitalize on their fortunate advantage, pressing for a second.
Despite the early gift, Fulham struggled to extend their lead, and the first half ended with Marco Silva’s side holding a slender advantage. Everton, however, showed signs of resilience and knew they needed a stronger attacking display after the break.
The second half saw an increase in physical battles, with yellow cards issued to Everton’s James Garner in the 57th minute and Mykolenko again in the 65th. Fulham’s Jorge Cuenca also entered the referee’s book two minutes later.
Everton’s persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, a key figure in midfield, fired home a crucial equalizer, assisted by Mykolenko, who redeemed himself following his earlier own goal.
The drama escalated further in the 83rd minute. In a cruel twist of fate, Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno parried a shot that ultimately bounced back off him and into his own net, gifting Everton a 2-1 lead. This decisive moment left the home crowd stunned.
Fulham pushed desperately for an equalizer in the dying minutes, bringing on fresh legs like Emile Smith Rowe and Timothy Castagne. However, Everton’s defence, marshalled by an impressive Jordan Pickford, held firm against the late onslaught. Pickford even picked up a yellow card for delaying the game in injury time.
Despite Fulham enjoying more possession with 55% and registering 13 total shots, they managed only 3 on target. Everton, with 45% possession, had 16 shots, also with 3 on target. Fulham’s expected goals (xG) of 1.97 highlighted their missed opportunities, while Everton’s 1.68 xG suggested their two goals, both stemming from defensive errors, were somewhat opportunistic.
This hard-fought victory sees Everton leapfrog Fulham in the Premier League table, moving into ninth position. The Toffees will celebrate a gritty win, while Fulham will lament a game defined by two unfortunate own goals.
