Crystal Palace and Leeds battled to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. The Premier League clash was marked by late first-half drama, including a missed penalty and a red card for Leeds.
Both teams entered the match needing points to climb the Premier League table. Crystal Palace, sitting 14th with 38 points, aimed to consolidate their position. Leeds, just one spot below in 15th with 31 points, sought to widen the gap from the relegation zone.
The opening exchanges were tight, but the physicality soon ramped up. In the 26th minute, Leeds midfielder Gylfi Gudmundsson received the first yellow card for holding. His teammate Jaka Bijol then followed him into the book just five minutes later after committing a foul.
Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes also saw yellow in the 44th minute for a handball. The match became heated just before halftime. Leeds earned a penalty in the 45th minute after a foul inside the box.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to take the crucial spot-kick. However, he struck his effort wide, squandering a golden chance to open the scoring. The drama escalated further.
Following the missed penalty, both managers, Oliver Glasner of Palace and Daniel Farke of Leeds, were shown yellow cards in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Seconds later, in the fifth minute of added time, Gudmundsson received a second yellow card for roughing, resulting in his immediate red card dismissal.
Leeds faced a significant challenge for the second half, forced to play with ten men. Crystal Palace, with a clear numerical advantage, now had a prime opportunity to push for a decisive winner at home.
Leeds boss Farke quickly responded at the break. He introduced Luca Nmecha and Brenden Aaronson in a double substitution to re-organise his ten-man side. Palace’s Brennan Johnson earned a yellow card for tripping in the 55th minute.
Palace manager Glasner made his own tactical changes on the hour mark. He brought on Adam Wharton and Jorgen Strand Larsen, aiming to inject more attacking impetus. Despite these fresh legs, Palace found it difficult to break down a determined Leeds defense.
Later, in the 80th minute, Palace made further changes. Jaydee Canvot and Daichi Kamada joined the fray, but still the breakthrough eluded them. Leeds showed immense resilience to hold their opponents.
The match finished goalless, a frustrating outcome for the Eagles. Crystal Palace dominated possession with 66% but remarkably failed to register a single shot on target from their 11 attempts. Leeds, despite playing a man down for half the match, managed three shots on target from 10 total shots. Their expected goals (xG) of 1.12 significantly overshadowed Palace’s 0.56, largely due to the missed penalty. Palace goalkeeper Walter Benítez made three important saves.
This hard-fought draw sees both teams remain mired in the congested Premier League mid-table. Leeds will take heart from their spirited defensive performance. Crystal Palace, however, will reflect on a significant missed opportunity to secure three valuable points.
