Jude Bellingham scored twice as England came from behind to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time and book a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
The quarter-final in the 2026 tournament had been billed as a battle of elite number nines, but Harry Kane and Erling Haaland were largely neutralised by superb defensive work.
Norway struck first in the 36th minute when Patrick Berg stripped Kane of possession and set up Andreas Schjelderup to finish. It was a deserved lead after an energetic start from Ståle Solbakken's side.
England responded on the stroke of half-time as Anthony Gordon delivered a low cross from the left for Bellingham to equalise in the second minute of added time.
Kane thought he had turned the game immediately after, but his effort in the 45th minute plus four was ruled out for offside.
Norway thought they had retaken the lead early in the second half when Torbjørn Heggem found the net in the 55th minute.
The goal was overturned by VAR two minutes later after Haaland was adjudged to have fouled Elliot Anderson in the build-up.
With the score locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the tie went to extra time and England found a winner in the 93rd minute. Bellingham pounced on the rebound after Ørjan Nyland spilled a long-range effort from Morgan Rogers.
Drama continued in extra time as Djed Spence went down in the box in the 102nd minute, with a penalty initially given before VAR overturned the decision.
Moments earlier Norway players had protested that the ball struck an overhead camera cable, but FIFA reportedly checked the ball's sensor data and found no peak.
Haaland's frustrating night ended at the start of the second period of extra time when he was substituted in the 105th minute without scoring for the first time at this World Cup.
Bellingham left to a standing ovation when he was withdrawn in the 110th minute after taking his tournament tally to six.
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also reached a personal milestone with his 18th World Cup appearance, breaking the outright national record previously shared with Peter Shilton.
The victory sends England into the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face either Argentina or Switzerland. Norway, meanwhile, bow out at the quarter-final stage in their first appearance in a major tournament quarter-final.
