Marseille got their 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign off to a winning start as they claimed a 2-0 victory over 10-man Strasbourg at the Orange Vélodrome.
The season curtain-raiser marked the competitive debut of new Marseille head coach Bruno Génésio, while Hugo Oliveira took charge of Strasbourg for the first time following significant summer squad reshuffling.
Captained on the night by Timothy Weah, the home side established their authority early in the match and broke the deadlock in open play to seize a deserved advantage.
Strasbourg attempted to battle back into the opening encounter, but their hopes suffered a severe blow shortly before the hour mark when their discipline completely unravelled.
Midfielder Samir El Mourabet was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute, reducing Oliveira's side to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
Tempers flared only moments later when Strasbourg forward Sékou Mara received a yellow card in the 61st minute as the visitors struggled under sustained pressure.
Marseille swiftly capitalised on their numerical superiority just five minutes later when the hosts were awarded a spot-kick to double their cushion and take firm control.
Amine Gouiri stepped up in the 66th minute and made no mistake from 12 yards, calmly converting the penalty into the net to make it 2-0.
Génésio's men managed the closing stages with composure to wrap up a clean sheet and secure three points on the opening matchday of the season.
