Chelsea and Atalanta have officially confirmed the permanent transfer of Marco Palestra, closing a deal worth a reported €60 million (£47 million) and handing Xabi Alonso his first signing as head coach.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the structure of the deal is €57 million upfront plus €3 million in add-ons, with Atalanta retaining a 10 per cent sell-on clause on any future sale of the 21-year-old.
The move capped a dramatic few days that began when Chelsea hijacked Inter Milan's pursuit of the right-back between June 23 and 24, gazumping a deal that had seen Inter close to an agreement with Atalanta worth €45 million plus €5 million in add-ons.
Palestra flew to London on June 26 to undergo his medical before finalising personal terms, ending any lingering hope in Milan that the move could still collapse.
The Italian international has signed a long-term contract running through 2033, reported as a six-year deal with the option for an additional year at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea also doubled Inter's wage offer to seal the deal, agreeing to pay Palestra between €5 million and €6 million net per season compared to the €2.5 million previously on the table in Milan.
Born in March 2005, Palestra joined Atalanta's academy at the age of 10 and spent last season on loan at Cagliari, developing into a full Italy international as a right-back and wing-back capable of operating on either flank.
His speed and versatility on both sides of defence make him a natural fit for Alonso's preferred wing-back system, with the Spaniard sanctioning the move as his opening statement of intent in west London.
The pursuit of Palestra followed Chelsea's failed attempt to sign Roma's Wesley, with the Giallorossi refusing to sell the Brazilian wide player after securing Champions League qualification, prompting the Blues to pivot aggressively towards Atalanta's academy graduate.
Palestra bid an emotional farewell to Atalanta on Instagram, writing that he arrived in Bergamo as a child and that the club "was much more than a club" for him, describing it as the place where he grew up as both a player and a person.
The signing continues a busy summer of business under Alonso, who has already been credited with pursuing other targets across defence, including ongoing talks over a left-back as the new manager looks to reshape his back line ahead of the new season.
With Palestra's arrival now confirmed, attention turns to how quickly the Italian can adapt to Alonso's system and whether further additions follow as Chelsea continue reshaping their squad for the campaign ahead.
