Atletico Madrid demolished Tottenham 5-2 in a UEFA Champions League masterclass, with Julián Alvarez delivering a sensational two-goal, one-assist performance.
Entering the match, Atletico Madrid sat seventh in their Champions League group with 12 points, displaying strong recent form. Tottenham, just two places behind, hoped to close the gap on their rivals.
The game exploded into life early, with Tottenham’s Djed Spence receiving a yellow card for tripping in the fourth minute. Just two minutes later, Marcos Llorente opened the scoring, guiding home a clinical finish after an assist from Julian Alvarez.
The floodgates then truly opened for the hosts. Antoine Griezmann doubled Atletico’s lead in the 14th minute with a well-placed strike. Astonishingly, Julian Alvarez added a third just 60 seconds later, leaving Tottenham reeling from the rapid onslaught.
The defensive woes continued for the visitors as Robin Le Normand netted Atletico’s fourth goal in the 22nd minute. This incredible start gave the home side an almost unassailable lead early in the first half.
Tottenham found a lifeline four minutes later when Pedro Porro pulled one back, firing past the goalkeeper in the 26th minute, assisted by Richarlison. It offered a faint glimmer of hope before the break.
At half-time, Tottenham manager faced a monumental task, needing a significant tactical shift to stem the tide and prevent further damage. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, looked comfortable in their commanding position.
The second half saw immediate changes for Tottenham, with Mathis Tel and Randal Kolo Muani introduced. However, Atletico quickly extinguished any comeback hopes.
Julian Alvarez completed his double in the 55th minute, linking up with Griezmann to slot home Atletico’s fifth goal. This devastating blow cemented his status as the match’s standout player.
Tottenham’s frustration mounted, leading to a flurry of yellow cards for Richarlison and Andre Gray. Late substitutions by both teams injected fresh legs but did not change the overall flow.
Dominic Solanke grabbed a consolation goal for Tottenham in the 76th minute, assisted by Porro, but it was far too late. Further bookings for Kevin Danso and Cristian Romero highlighted Tottenham’s difficult evening.
Atletico Madrid dominated statistics, boasting 58% possession and scoring five goals from seven shots on target. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 3.12 compared to Tottenham’s 1.41, reflecting their superior attacking threat.
This emphatic 5-2 victory significantly strengthens Atletico Madrid’s position in the Champions League group. Tottenham, now with just one win in their last five group games, will need a swift response to stay in contention.
