Girona delivered a stunning 3-0 victory over Athletic Club, defying pre-match expectations and largely due to the early impact of Hugo Rincón and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
Entering the crucial La Liga clash, Girona, sitting 15th in the table, desperately sought points to pull away from the relegation zone. Visitors Athletic Club, positioned 10th, arrived at Estadio Municipal de Montilivi with ambitions of pushing for European qualification.
The home side wasted no time in making their mark. Just four minutes into the game, right-back Hugo Rincón fired Girona into an early lead. Viktor Tsygankov delivered a precise assist, catching the Athletic defense off guard.
Athletic Club responded with urgency, attempting to assert their control over the midfield. Despite having more possession and creating several dangerous opportunities, they found Girona’s defense resolute.
Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga became a pivotal figure for Girona throughout the first half. He produced a series of crucial saves, thwarting multiple Athletic attacks and preserving his team’s slender advantage at the break.
At halftime, Athletic Club’s coach undoubtedly urged his side to find a breakthrough. They needed to convert their chances and overcome Girona’s stubborn resistance, while Girona aimed to maintain their defensive shape and seek counter-attacking opportunities.
The second half began with tactical changes from Athletic, introducing R. Navarro and A. Gorosabel. Still, Girona’s defensive discipline held firm, frustrating the Basque visitors.
As the game entered its final quarter, Athletic’s frustration grew, evident in Oihan Sancet receiving a yellow card in the 73rd minute. He was substituted shortly after, signaling a shift in tactics.
Girona then delivered a decisive blow in the 77th minute. Substitute Claudio Echeverri, who entered the fray just seven minutes prior, assisted Azzedine Ounahi, who slotted home to double Girona’s lead.
With time running out, Athletic Club pushed hard, but their efforts were increasingly desperate, leading to another yellow card for Álex Berenguer. Girona seized on the open play, and in the 92nd minute, Claudio Echeverri capped off a brilliant cameo with a goal of his own, again assisted by Viktor Tsygankov, to complete the rout.
Despite Athletic Club boasting a higher Expected Goals (xG) of 1.76 compared to Girona’s 1.3, and registering more shots on goal (9 to 6), Girona proved far more clinical. Gazzaniga’s eight saves were instrumental.
This comprehensive 3-0 victory provides a massive boost for Girona, lifting them momentarily from their precarious league position. For Athletic Club, it’s a significant setback, hindering their European aspirations and forcing a period of reflection.
