FC Augsburg staged a remarkable late comeback, scoring twice in the final minutes to snatch a thrilling 3-2 victory over VfL Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena.

VfL Wolfsburg squandered a lead twice, suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat against FC Augsburg in a dramatic Bundesliga clash on February 21, 2026. Elvis Rexhbecaj netted the decisive goal deep into stoppage time, securing all three points for the visitors after a hard-fought encounter.

The Wolves entered the match in a challenging 13th position. Their recent form was patchy, with only one win in their last five league outings.

Meanwhile, Augsburg sat 11th in the table. They enjoyed a better run of results, including two victories and two draws from their recent fixtures. Both teams aimed to climb the congested mid-table.

The first half saw both sides battle for control. Early action included a yellow card for Wolfsburg’s Lovro Majer in the 17th minute for a foul.

As halftime approached, Wolfsburg found a breakthrough. In the 41st minute, Yannick Gerhardt fired home, assisted by a clever pass from Christian Eriksen. This goal gave the home side a crucial advantage just before the break.

Wolfsburg took a slender 1-0 lead into the dressing rooms. Augsburg needed a strong second-half response to avoid falling further behind. The match promised more goals and intense action after the restart.

The second half exploded with renewed energy and cards. Augsburg’s Rodrigo Ribeiro received a yellow card in the 50th minute, followed by Keven Schlotterbeck five minutes later.

Ribeiro quickly turned from carded player into hero. He equalized for Augsburg in the 59th minute, with Alexis Claude-Maurice providing the assist.

Wolfsburg responded decisively in the 70th minute. Substitute Kento Shiogai, brought on just five minutes earlier, restored their lead with a sharp finish. Mohamed Amoura provided the assist. The Volkswagen Arena erupted, thinking Wolfsburg had secured the win.

However, Augsburg refused to give up. Kristijan Jakić picked up a yellow card in the 86th minute. Moments later, Michael Gregoritsch converted a penalty in the 87th minute, drawing the scores level once more.

The drama reached its peak deep into stoppage time. Elvis Rexhbecaj sealed the comeback in the 90+3rd minute. He guided home another crucial assist from Claude-Maurice to snatch an improbable victory.

Augsburg’s victory defied their Expected Goals (xG) of 0.91, significantly lower than Wolfsburg’s 1.57 xG. The visitors registered 14 total shots with 5 on target, compared to Wolfsburg’s 9 total shots and 4 on target. Possession was fairly even, with Augsburg slightly edging it at 53%.

This stunning away victory propelled FC Augsburg to 11th place in the Bundesliga standings. It improved their form and provided a significant morale boost. For VfL Wolfsburg, the late collapse was a bitter pill. It left them languishing in 13th and extended their winless run.
