Rennes stunned Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain with a commanding 3-1 victory at Roazhon Park. Goalkeeper Brice Samba delivered a heroic performance, anchoring a resilient Rennes side that defied expectations.

Paris Saint-Germain, second in the table and boasting five consecutive wins, arrived as heavy favorites. Rennes, sitting sixth and struggling for consistent form, faced a daunting challenge. Historically, Roazhon Park has sometimes proven a tricky ground for the Parisian giants, adding a layer of intrigue to this contest.

From kickoff, PSG asserted control, dominating possession and creating early opportunities. Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia tested the Rennes defense. However, Brice Samba was in exceptional form, making crucial saves to keep his team level.

Against the run of play, Rennes found their breakthrough in the 34th minute. Mousa Tamari, seizing a chance, slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma. The home crowd erupted as Rennes took a surprising lead.

PSG pressed hard for an equalizer before halftime, with several shots on target. Samba remained impenetrable, ensuring Rennes carried their slender advantage into the break. His agility denied PSG a quick response.

At halftime, Paris Saint-Germain needed a tactical shift to convert their chances into goals. Rennes, meanwhile, aimed to maintain their defensive shape and capitalize on counter-attacks. The second half promised more intense action.

PSG made early changes in the 60th minute, bringing on Désiré Doué and Lee Kang-in. They sought to inject fresh attacking impetus. Rennes responded by introducing Arnaud Nordin into the game.

Rennes then extended their lead in the 69th minute. Esteban Lepaul finished calmly, assisted by Sebastian Szymanski, doubling the advantage. Roazhon Park roared as the home side moved two goals clear.

Just three minutes later, in the 72nd minute, Paris Saint-Germain hit back. Ousmane Dembélé found the net, reducing the shortfall and reigniting PSG’s hopes. The game’s intensity surged as PSG pushed for another goal.

However, Rennes delivered a decisive blow in the 81st minute. Substitute Breel Embolo, on for just seven minutes, scored their third goal. Ludovic Blas provided the assist, restoring Rennes’ two-goal cushion and sealing the famous victory.

Despite Paris Saint-Germain’s overwhelming 67% possession and 22 total shots, including 7 on target, they scored only once. PSG’s expected goals (xG) stood at 3.62 against Rennes’ 1.36. This highlighted the hosts’ remarkable efficiency and Samba’s vital saves. Rennes turned limited opportunities into maximum impact.

This stunning 3-1 upset sends a clear message across Ligue 1. Rennes secured a memorable victory, boosting their European qualification hopes. For PSG, this unexpected defeat is a significant setback in their title challenge, forcing a reevaluation of their strategy.
