Joel Roca’s dramatic injury-time equalizer salvaged a crucial point for Girona in a thrilling 1-1 draw against ten-man Levante at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia.
Levante had been on the verge of a vital victory in their fight against relegation, despite playing over 30 minutes with a numerical disadvantage.
Entering the fixture, Levante found themselves 19th in La Liga, desperately needing points. Girona, sitting 12th, aimed to solidify their mid-table standing and climb higher. The stage was set for a competitive encounter.
The first half saw Girona controlling possession, dictating the tempo of the game. However, clear-cut chances were hard to come by for the visitors. Levante defended stoutly, absorbing pressure and looking for opportunities to counter.
The only notable incident of the opening period came in the 26th minute. Girona’s H. Rincón received a yellow card for an elbowing offense, highlighting the physical nature of the contest.
At the interval, the score remained goalless. Girona needed to find a way to convert their possession into goals. Levante required more attacking threat if they hoped to claim all three points.
The second half exploded into action five minutes after the restart. Levante broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. Carlos Espí tucked home a well-taken goal, assisted by Víctor García, sending the home crowd into raptures.
However, Levante’s lead proved precarious. Just nine minutes later, in the 59th minute, J. A. Olasagasti received a straight red card for a serious foul. Levante faced the daunting task of holding on with ten men.
Girona immediately ramped up the pressure, utilizing their numerical advantage. Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan became Levante’s hero, making four crucial saves to keep his team ahead. Substitutions like Arnau Martínez and T. Lemar further pushed Girona forward.
The visitors’ relentless efforts finally paid off in the 90+4th minute. Substitute Joel Roca, who had only been on the pitch since the 54th minute, fired home the equalizer. Alejandro Francés provided the assist, snatching a point for Girona at the death.
Girona’s statistical dominance was evident, boasting 67% possession and 22 total shots, with five on target. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 2.08. Levante, by contrast, managed 33% possession, 14 shots (four on target), and an xG of 0.67.
This dramatic draw leaves Levante still deeply entrenched in the relegation zone, missing out on crucial points. Girona will view this as a point gained, but will lament not fully capitalizing on playing against ten men for so long. The late goals and highlights made for a compelling watch, and Girona will be pleased to find the back of the net, even if it was at the death.
