Erling Haaland, the formidable striker from Manchester City, has been crowned the 2022/23 Premier League Player of the Season. This announcement comes after an extraordinary season that saw Haaland break numerous records and lead his team to Premier League glory.

Haaland was up against some stiff competition for the award, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Kieran Trippier also on the shortlist. However, his phenomenal performance throughout the season made him the favorite for the prestigious accolade.

The decision was made based on a combination of public votes, expert panel opinions, and the views of the captains from all 20 Premier League teams. This makes Haaland the third consecutive City player to win the award, following Kevin De Bruyne and Ruben Dias. In fact, this is the fourth consecutive win for a City player, with De Bruyne having won in both 2019/20 and 2021/22, and Dias in 2020/21.

Haaland’s debut season in the Premier League was nothing short of spectacular. The Norwegian sensation broke the record for the most goals scored in a single campaign, surpassing the 34 goals netted by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole to reach an astonishing 36 strikes. This tally could potentially increase in the season finale against Brentford.

In total, Haaland scored a whopping 52 goals in all competitions, placing him second only to Everton legend Dixie Dean in the record books for English top-flight football. Dean scored an incredible 63 goals in the 1927/28 season, making him the only player to ever outscore Haaland in English football.

This latest honor comes just days after Haaland was awarded the FWA Footballer of the Year. Upon accepting the award, the striker expressed his surprise at his own success, saying, “I didn’t expect it to be this good! I expected it to be good of course. To come into a team that’s been scoring many goals while winning the Premier League a lot of times – two in a row now three, I expected to do good things but to do this I didn’t quite expect.”
