Manchester United’s manager, Erik Ten Hag, is reportedly open to the idea of reintegrating Mason Greenwood into the squad for the 2023/24 season. This comes after charges of attempted rape and assault against the 21-year-old were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that made conviction unrealistic.
Internal Investigation Nearing Completion
Manchester United has been conducting its own internal investigation into the matter, which is nearing its conclusion. Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford has been uncertain, with reports from the Daily Mail suggesting that the club is considering loaning the striker out, with interest from clubs in Spain, Turkey, and Italy.
Ten Hag’s Stance
According to The Sun, Ten Hag is willing to bring Greenwood back into the squad. However, the final decision will be made by the Glazer family, the owners of Manchester United. This could be a controversial decision, as earlier this year, the Red Devils’ women players called for Greenwood to leave.
Despite this, most of Greenwood’s teammates are reportedly willing to welcome him back if the Glazers agree with Ten Hag’s stance. From a commercial and sponsorship standpoint, there are some concerns if Greenwood does play for United again.
Greenwood’s Frustration
A source told The Sun, “Mason was delighted to hear that the manager and most of his teammates would welcome him back. He firmly believes he is an innocent man and is very frustrated he’s not been able to play. He understands that the club have had to carry out an investigation, but he feels like his career is slipping by.”
Loan Interest from Italian Giants
Italian giants Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter have all shown an interest in signing the youngster on loan. Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan believes a temporary exit would be the best solution for all parties.
What’s Next for Greenwood?
Greenwood, who has one cap for England, has not played for United since January 2022, which was the same month as his arrest and his club suspension. The question now is what is the best way forward for him and for Manchester United.
