Pochettino’s appointment comes after a series of negotiations following the exit of Graham Potter. Initially, the Blues had reservations about Pochettino due to his emotional attachment to rival club Spurs. However, the talks were positive, and Pochettino was chosen over former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann.
Interestingly, Pochettino was also linked with a return to north London following the departure of Antonio Conte, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy did not make an approach. Now, Pochettino stands as the third permanent manager, and fifth including interims, of the Todd Boehly-Clearklake Capital era at Chelsea.
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, expressed their confidence in Pochettino, stating, “Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward.”
The Blues had a challenging first season under their new owners, finishing in mid-table despite record-breaking transfer spending. Pochettino is keen to add a striker and goalkeeper to the squad, which needs to be trimmed down over the summer.
The club’s owners added, “Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.”
