Ramy Bensebaini’s late double penalty heroics completed a stunning comeback for Borussia Dortmund, who overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Hamburger SV 3-2 at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.

Borussia Dortmund, sitting comfortably in second place in the Bundesliga with 58 points, hosted Hamburger SV, an impressive 11th-placed side following their recent return to the top flight. The stage was set for a compelling clash, with BVB looking to maintain pressure at the top. HSV, meanwhile, aimed to disrupt their high-flying opponents.

The visitors shocked the home crowd by taking an early lead. In the 19th minute, Philip Otele guided home the opener, assisted by W. Mikelbrencis. This unexpected goal silenced the Yellow Wall and gave HSV confidence.

Hamburger SV then extended their lead before halftime. Albert Sambi Lokonga fired in their second goal in the 38th minute, assisted by Fábio Vieira. Dortmund found themselves trailing by two goals, a rare and concerning situation at home.

Just before the break, BVB had a golden opportunity to halve the shortfall. Felix Nmecha stepped up for a penalty in the 45th minute, but his effort went wide, denying Dortmund a crucial lifeline. Yellow cards for Nicolai Remberg and Karim Adeyemi followed in stoppage time, reflecting the growing tension.

At halftime, Borussia Dortmund faced a significant challenge. Manager Edin Terzic needed a tactical shift and an injection of energy to spark a comeback. The team required a drastic improvement to overturn the two-goal disadvantage.

Terzic responded with decisive changes at the restart. Ramy Bensebaini and Serhou Guirassy were introduced in the 46th minute, immediately impacting the game’s dynamic. These substitutions proved pivotal in changing Dortmund’s fortunes.

As the second half unfolded, Dortmund pressed relentlessly. HSV defended valiantly, but pressure mounted. W. Mikelbrencis received a yellow card for a foul in the 72nd minute, conceding a penalty.

Bensebaini calmly converted the spot-kick in the 73rd minute, bringing Dortmund back into the contest. The stadium erupted as the comeback gained momentum. Just five minutes later, Guirassy leveled the score, slotting home a crucial goal in the 78th minute.

With parity restored, Dortmund pushed for a winner. In the 84th minute, Bensebaini earned and converted another penalty, clinching a dramatic victory. His second penalty of the night sealed an unforgettable turnaround.

Borussia Dortmund’s statistics painted a picture of dominance despite the early struggles. They finished with 69% ball possession, 24 total shots (8 on target), and an expected goals (xG) figure of 6.41, vastly superior to HSV’s 1.47 xG from just 4 total shots (all 4 on target). HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes made 5 crucial saves, keeping his team in the game for long periods.

This thrilling victory strengthens Borussia Dortmund’s hold on second place in the Bundesliga. It showcases their resilience and fighting spirit, a valuable trait as the season progresses. For Hamburger SV, it was a valiant effort that ultimately fell short against a resurgent Dortmund.
