Bayern München clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory over rivals Borussia Dortmund, with Joshua Kimmich’s late strike proving decisive in a thrilling Der Klassiker.
The Bundesliga’s top two teams locked horns at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on February 28, 2026. Bayern arrived as league leaders, eight points clear of their hosts. Dortmund sought to reignite their title challenge with a crucial home win.
The match exploded into action with an early caution. Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck received a yellow card in the 20th minute for a rough challenge.
Just six minutes later, Schlotterbeck redeemed himself. He powered home an opener in the 26th minute, converting a well-placed assist from Daniel Svensson. The Signal Iduna Park crowd erupted as Dortmund took a surprising lead.
Bayern München, despite dominating possession, struggled to convert their control into clear-cut chances. Dortmund’s defence held firm, weathering the pressure. They maintained their slender advantage into the break.
At half-time, Bayern’s coach undoubtedly urged his team to increase their attacking intensity. Dortmund, meanwhile, needed to prepare for an inevitable onslaught in the second period.
The visitors quickly found their rhythm after the restart. Harry Kane levelled the score in the 54th minute, guiding home an excellent pass from Serge Gnabry. The Bayern striker continued his prolific goal-scoring form.
Bayern then pushed for a second, and it arrived from the penalty spot. Kane confidently dispatched a penalty in the 70th minute, completing his double after a foul in the box. Bayern München seized a 2-1 lead.
Dortmund refused to surrender. Daniel Svensson brought the home side back into the game, slotting home an equaliser in the 83rd minute. Marcel Sabitzer provided the assist, setting up a nervy finish.
However, Bayern had one last decisive moment. Joshua Kimmich fired in the winner in the 87th minute, sealing three vital points for the champions. His late goal silenced the home support.
Bayern’s superior possession (67%) and expected goals (xG 2.05) eventually paid off. Dortmund, with an xG of 1.04, was efficient with their limited shots on target. Harry Kane earned an 8.7 rating for his two goals.
This dramatic 3-2 victory extends Bayern München’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to eleven points. Borussia Dortmund’s title ambitions now face a significant uphill battle.
