Jarell Quansah’s dramatic late equalizer salvaged a point for Bayer Leverkusen in a tense 1-1 draw against FSV Mainz 05 at the BayArena.
Bayer Leverkusen, currently sixth in the Bundesliga table, sought to solidify their European qualification push. They faced an FSV Mainz 05 side sitting 13th but buoyed by a strong run of recent form, losing just one of their last five league matches.
The first half saw Leverkusen dominate possession, controlling 65% of the ball. However, Xabi Alonso’s side struggled to convert this into meaningful chances against a resolute Mainz defense.
Mainz, under coach Bo Svensson, remained compact, absorbing pressure and looking for opportunities on the counter. Despite Leverkusen’s ball control, both goalkeepers, Janis Blaswich for Leverkusen and Daniel Batz for Mainz, had a relatively quiet opening 45 minutes.
At the interval, Leverkusen needed to find more creativity and urgency in the final third. Mainz, meanwhile, would have been pleased with their defensive display and looked to maintain their structure while potentially exploiting space as the hosts pushed forward.
The second half sparked into life with increased intensity from both teams. Tensions flared in the 66th minute, leading to yellow cards for Mainz’s Stefan Posch and Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.
Just a minute later, Mainz delivered a shock. Sheraldo Becker broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, slotting home expertly after receiving a precise pass from Paul Nebel. The goal put the visitors unexpectedly ahead.
Leverkusen responded by piling on pressure, making several attacking substitutions. Their persistence paid off late in the game. Defender Jarell Quansah, showing composure in attack, found the equalizer in the 88th minute, guided home after a clever assist from C. Kofane. The home crowd erupted as Leverkusen snatched a vital point.
The closing moments saw Mainz’s L. Maloney receive a yellow card in the 90+2 minute for roughing, reflecting the match’s intense finish.
Despite their significant possession advantage (65%), Bayer Leverkusen registered a low expected goals (xG) figure of 0.22. In contrast, Mainz created better quality chances, with an xG of 0.69 from their 7 total shots, 4 of which were on target, compared to Leverkusen’s 3 shots on target from 5 attempts.
This hard-fought 1-1 draw means Bayer Leverkusen loses ground in the race for European places. For FSV Mainz 05, it is a valuable away point that strengthens their position in the bottom half of the table as they continue their fight against relegation.
